Discrimination against Disability

March 30th, 2006

Okay so today during recess time, I encountered a few baboons Malay guys picking on this Chinese girl who have this minor disability. So they were picking on her and calling her names. I just walked past at first but my conscience somehow pulled me back and I pulled the girl away from those no good baboons of a human.

I don’t understand how could we humans, of the same species and the same from every biological aspect, could possibly be so mean…almost inhumane to another of the same kind. Those baboons of a human really lash out on that poor girl. This is merely an enactment of the real thing that is going on in the Big Bad World.

Discrimination against disability is nothing new in the society. The same old music had been played over and over again. From the notorious Western countries to the subtle Eastern country, discrimination against disability is nothing new to our ears.

There had been measures taken by government and private societies alike to fight this matter. However, this so-called war that is raged against the matter is nothing but a mediocre attempt to bring down the social issue. I’m not sure whether the blame should be put on the society or the lame attempts by certain organizations. I guess you can’t really point your finger at any particular person or organization. You could see this matter through a myriad of point of views.

Most of us are guilty of discriminating and treating the disabled people, whether intentionally or not. Abled people treat people with disabilities patronizingly, as though they are little children and don’t understand the syllables of words that are muttered. People with disabilities are also not taken seriously and never have any freedom of speech. Tell me about respecting the rights of the disabled and democracy again. For instance, a woman in wheelchair may be completely ignored in a coffee shop. Or maybe an incident where the shop helper will ask another particular person this question, “Does she want latte or mocha?” rather than the woman herself will occur.

Another particular situation is in the streets where a Down syndrome boy is stared at in a certain mocking way or either treated like they were invisible by the public. There would also be quite a number of people who will past through them rudely. My point is, disabled people should be treated right and treated equally by the society.

Although most people are unaware of this fact, people with disabilities also have the interest to visit public areas such as the public library, state museum, art galleries and shopping malls. Thus, it is a down right disappointment to them when they found out that certain amenities like ramps and toilets that are specialized for the disabled are not provided. It is here that we are introduced to the lack of concern by government and private organizations. They spent their money on low cost campaigns and advertisements but they forgot (unintentionally or intentionally) to provide the bare necessities for people with disabilities. There is however certain places that provide these amenities and this prove to make life easier for disabled people.

Nowadays, many disabled people manage their life at home perfectly well without another person’s assistance. They might have customized escalators and reasonably roomy room at their apartment. They could fend for themselves with the assistance of a range of specially adapted appliances. It is when they venture outside that their life is made miserable, by the lack of respect by the publics and public amenities.

We need to bear in mind that people with disabilities could be the director of a successful corporate company, people with disabilities could be someone with a PhD in Engineering and people with disabilities could be a mother or a father to a perfectly healthy and happy family. Disabled people are also people with profession and family. In other words, people with disabilities are people.

Some provision is now being made for disabled people, but they need more! They need more facilities and most important of all they need more right and respect! So abled people should respect them and government should do something to further reinforce their rights. We wouldn’t want to be accused of ableism, do we?

As good Malaysians and good inhibitor of the Earth, start easing the lives of people with disabilities. Treat them with respect and treat them right. We are no different from them, so stop displaying our ego. As a normal Malaysian teenager and one of the voices of tomorrow, I do hope that the lives of people with disabilities will be eased by the public and responsible organizations. In fact, I think it doesn’t sound right to me to call people with disabilities “disabled people”. Instead, I will see them as people for bear in mind…we are no different from them.

Who’s That Ghoul?

March 16th, 2006

It’s the holidays and I have been sick for a big part of the holidays. No thanks to my younger bro. The doctor perceived that it was some viral infection and now my mom had caught up with it. Tell me about pop culture.

Anyway, my uncle’s wedding is this Saturday and Sunday. He’s the Basics Economy teacher from my dad’s site who lives in Kajang. Yeah!! I’ve got something to save my holidays from becoming a major disaster.Lol.

I’m going to OU tomorrow cuz’ my mom is gonna get some clothes for the big "Chin’s family occasion of the year". Yeah, that means I’m gonna have some time to hang out at MPH or check out Fiona Apple’s Extraordinary Machine album. That is after I got myself a pair of shoes ( I didn’t get one for CNY T.T).

Oh yeah, my bro just uploaded some of the photos in his cellphone and I’ve got something to show all you bloggers out there!

Image07 That’s me!! I told you on my entry about my school’s Canteen Day. I was literally metamorphose into a walking zombie. Well, the pic was only taken after a few hours the make-up was put on…therefore, it might not be so nice already. I wore a robe at first but soon took it off cuz it was like wearing a ‘jubah’ and it seems like I am going to perform the Haji in Mecca.Lol. JK. The pic is kinda small but hey something is better than nothing right?

Till then guys, hope you guys have a great time ahead!

A Metamorphosis : SMKBSD(2)’s Canteen Day

March 6th, 2006

The Saturday morning sky was still surrounded by the veil of darkness. However, most of the students of SMKBSD (2) were already as busy as the bees making some last minute touch-up to their stalls and stuff like that. There is no denying that even the teachers are rushing here and there. There were even an expression of panic is some teachers and students.

As I walked into the school assembly area, the first thing I noticed was a looming object made of wood and tied together like something that you would see in a native-Indian documentary. I then realized it was some sort of game that requires players to try to throw off someone who is sitting on a plank of board into a big bucket of water. I headed down to the school hall where the Haunted House is going to be held. The sight of anxious and excited faces greeted me when I entered the Haunted House. Everyone (the committee members of Haunted House) was getting ready for the operation of the Haunted House in less than an hour.

After I’ve made sure that the counter area is ready, some of the members of the Haunted House project applied some black and white make-up on my face. I was metamorphose into a walking zombie in an instance. It was quite fun to do it actually although I tried to prevent the make-up from touching my face. When I got out of the Haunted House, the sun had already shined and a few people were lining up to wait for their turn to enter the Haunted House. Everyone couldn’t recognize me in the disguise of mine! Many of my classmates were surprised when they found out that it was me behind all those make-up. By this time, the school compound had already been filled up with people. I went back to the Haunted House and performed my duty. I had been left in-charge of the counter a.k.a ‘Dungeon Keeper’.

My shift ended at

11 am

sharp. I went to have a look around after that. The teacher’s parking lots had been used as the place for the stalls. The games and activities that were held on that day were too numerous to mention. Painting your own T-shirt, throwing darts and jumble sale were among the many exciting stalls that were present. Besides that, there was also horse riding and paint ball stalls. However, these two stalls weren’t that popular as it was situated in an un-strategic area. The crowds were entertained with some music and live bands all throughout the day.

In the school’s canteen, all types of food and cuisine could be found. From Malay to Western food, the canteen was definitely a hit with all those who love to feast their appetites. There was also an A&W’s booth situated at the school’s basketball court where frothy root beers and hot delicious curly fries among others were served.

There was also a lucky draw going on where the grand prize was a 29 inch television. Among other prizes were cell phones, microwave oven, hampers and much more. The lucky draw prove to be an excellent gimmick as many outsiders were present on that day. I am sure that couldn’t be the only attraction as the activities and games held on that day was very exciting.

As the sky reveals a deep shade of orange, it was clear that the Canteen Day was drawing to an end. After the grand prize of the lucky draw had been given away, the day’s crowd began to leave the school’s compound. Happy faces and voices could be seen and heard as the crowd left the school’s compound. As for the students and teachers who remained, it was clear that their next mission was to clean up. Still, it was fun while it lasted.

The school had undergone a metamorphosis on that day. It is my hope that the school will hold a Canteen Day again next year. What’s next for SMK Bandar Sri Damansarians?

The school’s Sports Day. Let’s hit it SMK Bandar Sri Damansarians!!

An Encounter With A Lunatic

March 3rd, 2006

Today was a something like yesterday. It was so damn hectic today at school with both the teachers and students preparing for the Canteen Day tomorrow. After the assembly, I went to help out with the Haunted House project. There, I met this really freakin’ crazy form 1 girl. She kept on askin totally stupid questions. The first question she asked me was "Are you a prefect?"…then I looked at her and pointed at the uniform which I was wearing. " Oh, because I see you like not strict one". =.= Okie. Then I just gave her a sarcastic smile.

"Is your name Chester?". Yea…can’t you see my name tag?. "I’ve been a prefect since standard 2. Are you one now? Well missy, you don’t look like the prefect material to me! Did the teacher who elected you have a defect in her sight or what. Then I just smiled at her. Then this was the most terrible part…she hit me hard on my back and asked "Does that hurt?," with a smile. Hell, yeah! She then hit my friend who is beside me. Then I asked her sarcastically, "Why do you keep on asking stupid questions?". Then it happened again! She hit me hard on the back. "Does that hurt?," she asked again with a smile. "Yeah," I said politely with the sarcastic smile again. What the heck is wrong with this female of a dog? Such a moron. Omigosh, don’t tell me she hit people like that when she was a prefect?. I got out from that room and went to see one of my schoolmates and told her the entire account. "Yeah she’s a little crazy. I once went to see my brother and she shouted at me like she is the class monitor or something and call me to get out".

I’ve had my conclusion…the girl is a lunatic! I was so mad and I told my classmates the entire account. They agreed with me…she is crazy.

Gotta hit the sheets now. Gonna be really busy tomorrow.Nitez.

On A Hiding To Nothing

March 2nd, 2006

Today was a hectic day for me. I hardly sat at all during the day’s school session. The reason to all my business is because of the ‘Hari Kantin’ which is drawing near. I am involved with the Haunted House project and as soon as I put down my bag in the classroom, I had to go collect dry leaves. After that, I had to go to the school’s hall and help out with the decorations of the project. I was left with a moment of panic when I was put in charge of the project because the president and vice president of the Haunted House project was absent. I am very good at taking orders but to give orders? Not a chance. Thank all the gods when the president and vice president for the project finally show up.

Later that afternoon, I went for the Badminton Society meeting where I was the secretary. I was so stressed because I haven’t completed the member’s list. The reason for that is because I had been very extremely busy for the past few weeks what with the tests and homeworks (which I swear is piling up on my study table!). It doesn’t help that the president reprimanded me for not including some form four’s name. A part of me just wished to blurt out "Here take everything! Do it yourself!". I might have just said that for I had been having a highly volatile personality.

After that, one of my classmates called me ‘kiam siap’ (which basically means stingy in the Hokkien dialect) for not lending my badminton racquet to him. What is so wrong with him? That is outright outrageous. I mean I too want to play and it was me who carried the racquet from the beginning to the end. The worst thing is this ‘friend’ of mine just got elected as a school prefect. Totally impossible!

I mean he is the perfect epitome of an imbecile not a prefect. He actually spit water out from his mouth at people and yours truly here had been the victim of such outrageous behaviour.

I am also having a hard time with another one of my classmates which I prefer not to disclose since I wouldn’t wanna stir a drama. Who in their sanest mind would actually go against a very rude person who actually walks out of the BM lesson without notifying the teacher? Such an act of audacity just gets on my nerve. This particular person also forgave me for something that I didn’t do! Ridiculous!Oh and to be stuck with this particular person is a pain in you-know-where.

God save my soul. I am a teenager who seems to be angry with everything. Till then, I’ll rest my case. I might write an article on popularity because somewhere this week I had an encounter with one of this so-called popular kids at school. K.R. you can go stuck that big head of yours somewhere between that you-know-where of your.I am angsty don’t I?
